Writing Effective Article Titles

When writing an article, you should always try to create a title that accurately describes what that article is about, as well as captures the users attention.

It often helps to think of each article as if it was being printed in a newspaper. Headlines in newspapers grab the attention of the reader and encourage them to read on to find out more!

Some good examples of article titles are:

  • Seven Dwarves Charged with Hiding Fugitive
  • Cowboy Arrested for Space Ranger Attempted Murder
  • Ogre Evicted After Court Determines Swamp Crown Land

For comparison, here's some bad examples of titles:

  • New spiderman website
  • Coming soon
  • Updated details

If we re-wrote those titles, here's how they might look:

  • Friendly Neighbourhood Spider Excited to Launch New Website
  • Tony Stark Announces New Avengers Initiative
  • Royal Family Opens New Office in Washington

Title Case

Making your headline engaging isn't the only thing you should be focusing on; you need to use proper grammar, and check your spelling and punctuation!

What is "Title Case" you ask? As a basic rule, the first letter of every big word (more than 3 letters) should be capitalised. Have a look at the good examples above to see what we mean; notice the smaller words like "and", "the", "for", "or", "as", etc. are all lowercase but the bigger words have a capital letter? This is title case.
